The Fall Forage Seminar and Austin County Hay Show, sponsored by the Beef and Forage Committee of Austin County, will take place on Friday, October 5th, at the Austin County Fairgrounds in Bellville. The seminar is scheduled to begin with registration from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m., with the program starting at 9:00 a.m. This year’s seminar will cover a variety of topics, such as Benefits of Hay Testing, Laws and Regulations Update, and Understanding your results. Judging of the hay samples will take place prior to the seminar by the Texas A&M Forage testing lab, with the winners of the show being named at the end of the seminar. This year’s Austin County Hay Show will again offer awards to the top placing entries in each category. Three CEU’s (2 general & 1 laws and regulations) available to all pesticide applicators that attend the Fall Forage Seminar. There is a $20 fee for your participation and everyone is encouraged to contact the Extension Office to preregister at (979) 865-2072 or visit our Event Registration page, so we can have an accurate count for food and refreshments.

Hay samples may be turned in at the Austin County Extension Office, Harrison’s Farm Service and Linseisen’s Feed in Bellville, Adamcik’s Farm Supply and Steinhauser’s Inc. in Sealy, Dudensing Farm Service in New Ulm, and Lindemann’s Store and Blezinger’s Inc. in Industry from August 15- September 7, 2018.  The analysis is offered free of charge to anyone that is growing or feeding hay.

The analysis will give producers very useful information about the quality of the hay that they are feeding to livestock, and the test will help them determine what additional level of supplement that they may need during the winter.  The test will show the hays crude protein level, the level of total digestible and acid detergent fiber (ratio of leaf to stem).  The testing campaign and Hay Show is open to any hay producer from Austin, or surrounding counties.
