Bees & Trees New Landowner Program
August 17 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm$20
The August meeting for the 2018 New Landowners series will take place on Friday, August 17, 2018 at the Colorado County Fairgrounds HE Building (Exhibit Hall) located at 1146 Crossroads Blvd in Columbus. Beekeeping is quickly becoming a hot topic, especially for medium to small acreage landowners. Before you jump in head first and order that equipment and a hive of bees, come learn what to expect! We will hear from several area beekeepers on what it takes to raise honey bees in this area of Texas, some of the challenges they face, and what they’ve found to be good solutions. We will also hear from Certified Texas Master Beekeeper Justin Perry. There will be time for hands-on learning with beekeepers and the equipment, supplies, and tools that they bring.
Everyone has a favorite tree, and we all wish to keep those trees healthy and vigorous for the next generation to enjoy. But trees face many challenges and stresses in their environment. Come learn about tree biology, how to recognize common tree problems, and how to manage for tree health. We will “leaf” no question unanswered, discussing planting, pruning, watering, fertilizer, insect and disease control. Certified arborist, Mike Hackfield, of Columbus, will be there to share his knowledge which comes from decades in the tree business. He will discuss the most common tree issues he sees in this area and will then get to the root of the problem and what can be done about it. Additionally, if you wish to have a tree (or several trees) identified from your property, feel free to bring a sample. Any plant samples need to be as fresh as possible; we recommend bringing about an 18” section of branch or twig that includes leaves, flowers, seeds, or fruit (if applicable). Also, having some pictures of the whole tree and the bark will help to make positive identifications. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity!
